Complete The Circuit is our series of interviews with regulars on the Scottish comedy circuit. Each comedian answers our questions then nominates someone else to answer them next, until, having asked everyone who’s anyone we get back to the beginning. Next up, suggested by Christopher Macarthur-Boyd is Rosco McClelland…

Who are you, what are you and how are you feeling?

I’m Rosco McClelland, I’m the current Scottish Comedian of the Year and I feel bad because I ate a McDonald’s very late last night.

When did you first think “I’m a comedian”?

God… when I quit my stable job as a plumber to do the Fringe last year, essentially I had to be a comedian.

When did anyone else first think you were a comedian?

I remember making jokes in primary school to get girls to like me and it seemed to work so instead of being smart I just focussed on that I guess.

How do you like to work?

Usually I don’t write anything down or record anything, I’m quite quick so I prefer to just get point A and point B of a scenario and get up on stage and talk my way through it to see what comes out, then I keep saying it out loud until all the ad-libs become the jokes.

Someone nicks your joke. What do you do?

Feel impressed that someone has managed to make my rambling madness work for themselves.

What do you like most about the Scottish comedy circuit?

There’s some really astounding people that are great at doing things that I can’t and it makes me want to learn how to do what they do.

What do you like least about the Scottish comedy circuit?

Not that much to be honest, I finally feel at peace with my place within it. There’s loads of nice folk and we seem to enjoy each other’s company outside of working.

The Fringe – Heaven or Hell and why?

Heaven! Hell is getting up at 7am to be a plumber for the millionth time… now I’m sitting at 11:30am, I’ve just walked the dog, and I’m wondering when I can be arsed to head through to the Fringe.

What would you ban from comedy?

I’d ban new acts going over their scripts right before they go on… it makes you sound like a shit robot! Feel the crowd and go with the flow maaaaaaaan

In the kingdom of comedy, who’s the ruler, and what’s your role in the court?

In the kingdom of comedy the ruler is the audience on any given night, and I’m the jester just dancing around trying to keep my damn job.

Give us a comedian we should talk to next…

Talk to the big boy! The new Scottish best newcomer at the Scottish comedy awards… Donald Alexander!

Rosco McClelland: How I Got Over is @ Gilded Balloon Rose Theatre, Edinburgh, until Mon 28 Aug 2017
