Edinburgh’s African Film Festival, Africa in Motion (AiM) returns to the capital following its success last year. Taking place at the Filmhouse from the 2nd to the 6th of November, this festival has been a popular and diverse part of the Scottish film calendar since its inception in 2006. Now in its sixth year, AiM’s focus which is to introduce Scottish cinema goers to the often overlooked, but also very well-crafted world of African cinema and filmmaking remains as strong as ever. For 2011, the programme onto children and childhood, and features a number of African films, some of which that have already caused ripples in contemporary cinema, such as Pegase (Pegasus), which won the Golden Stallion Award at the world’s largest African film festival, FESPACO, earlier this year.
Run largely by volunteers, AiM is comprised of not just films, but also talks and readings, and is a prime opportunity for any film lover to experience something completely different, and to challenge any preconceived notions they have about Africa from the work of some of the best African writers, directors, actors and filmmakers.
