Néstor Frenkel / Argentina / 2011 / 76 min

Argentinian dentist Jorge Mario isn’t a man who does things by halves. Whether it’s setting up his own scout troop, taking part in shooting competitions or collecting everything from stamps to wine labels, he gives his all. His real passion however is for cinema and with thrillers, documentaries and westerns to his name, he was, until the advent of video, the king of Super 8.

Turning his camera on this pro-amateur, director Néstor Frenkel follows Jorge as he spools through his back-catalogue of Super 8 epics, only stopping along the way to do six other things including some backseat directing of Frenkel’s crew. The highlight of the film is Jorge’s attempts to remake his own 70s masterpiece: a revenge western called, Winchester Martin. As he struggles to find a cast, even attempting to inveigle his patients and local butcher into becoming celluloid banditos, he never loses his indomitable spirit and continues to smile no matter what obstacles stand in his way. This film is a great reminder that it isn’t the millions of dollars, the special effects or the star names that make film the special art-form it is; it’s the passion of people like Jorge who want to take a camera, load some film and tell us a story.
