Alone on the moon, cut off from all real-time contact with Earth, Sam Rockwell carves a model city, chats to GERTY (Hal) the computer (Kevin Spacey) and occasionally drives around doing some work. It may sound simplistic, but the lonely claustrophobia of his existence is well realised, as is his sense of hope as he anticipates the end of his mission, less than two weeks away.

However, Sam isn’t as solitary as he thought and he’s about to learn that nothing in his world is as he believed it to be. It’s powerfully relevant as present circumstances force so many of us to re-evaluate our lives and values. Sci-fi fans will appreciate the debt this film owes to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris, but even those who usually prefer to keep their feet on the ground will enjoy the tight plotting and strong acting – especially from Spacey, whose GERTY is remarkably engaging for a character who is nothing but a voice and a selection of emoticons. 😉
