The aesthetic of Little Cauliflower’s second Fringe outing is immediately striking: the set is all weathered wood, baskets and rope. It could be set nowhere else but in an Irish fishing village. This attention to detail carries through to the performers who are dressed in Arran jumpers and tweed, and the live music that seamlessly blends traditional folk music, original compositions and work songs. The company are brave enough to spend much of their allotted time setting the scene, with impressionistic images of swimming fish and swooping gulls as the villagers go about their business. The titular storm is a relatively short but pivotal sequence, rendered stunning with evocative sound effects and striking special effects. Little Cauliflower, it seems, can create magic from the simplest of stories.
