It’s said the efficacy of Greek mythology lies its depiction of our latent desires. If so, a story about queen lusting after a bull should have some of us quite worried. Fourth Monkey, as one of six plays this Fringe, have adapted the tales of the Minotaur and Icarus. The play is a finely directed minimalist piece, straddling both the traditional and modern in its concept. The most impressive moments are those where the cast combine their physicality, such as in the climactic battle between Theseus and the minotaur, (the beast being skilfully composed of several actors) or in Icarus’s hubristic finale. Yet for all its many merits, comparatively with other Fourth Monkey productions, there is something slightly lacking in Minotaur. Still, this is a beautiful contemporary staging of two ancient parables.
