All sketch shows seem to suffer from one sempiternal handicap: you really have to sift through chaff. Even with that said, to title this show ‘Champions’ may have been premature. Coming from Whitebone Productions (the Bane trilogy), Ed Eales-White is the sole performer in this motley collection of characters, all of whom are – in their own way – champions. Eales-White’s creations are certainly well characterised; he throws himself into each and as a performer it’s hard to fault him. Despite this, Eales-White relies more on the exuberance of delivery than content (though occasionally shooting near the mark, he often fails to get a direct hit). Much in this show depends on audience response so perhaps it was our fault, but on this occasion there was a distinct lack of champions.
