This documentary sees the delightful character of Herzog visiting Antarctica to further his analysis of extremes. He playfully introduces us to various odd balls that have arrived there and paints the grim structure the majority of them live in: mud-filled, artificial lighting, yoga classes and even an ATM. Obviously he escapes this area and moves into less inhabited lands. He meets a man who studies penguins and doesn’t talk to people, so Herzog asks him; ‘Do any of the penguins ever go insane?’ He goes on to follow one particular penguin giving a commentary of his actions as he leaves the flock and heads for the mountains. Herzog presents the sad, mysterious acts of nature, the effect this part of the world has on people and why they end up there. His aptly dry voice over is more enjoyable to listen to than the lapping ocean. Furthermore, he records the sound of seals under the bergs, more like an Aphex Twin record than sea creatures. Rightfully, this picture won Best Documentary of the festival, and we can only hope it runs on the big screen for all to see.
