In the Surface of a Bubble is an ambitious performance set in a vast and imaginative fantasy world. The four talented performers have their work cut out and do their best to populate this visceral landscape with a wide variety of colourful creatures and critters.

The adventure follows Michelle (Line Møller-Christensen) and Nathan (Adam Cridland) as they fall in love, transform and find the magic in their imaginations. Initially these characters appear as puppets. The puppets themselves are made up of tin rubbish bins that have been customised and manipulated to present character and warmth. Initially this works well as the abstract nature in their design fits the abstract world of the performance. However as the show progresses and the narrative begins to unfold, their design feels too primitive and seems a bit lost in the complexity of the story.

At times the performance can feel a bit like a glorious masquerade ball as all four performers make use of an array of well designed masks to present several characters. They switch from one character to the next without missing a beat and the result is an exhaustive, seamless and impressive performance. If you like fantasy storytelling that has interesting characters then you will definitely like In the Surface of a Bubble.
