The long anticipated UK premier of this fantastic film has finally arrived. Man On Wire delves into the incredible and peculiar life of Philippe Petit. This is a truly enthralling picture. We see him juggling and performing on the high-wire in his garden, across Notre Dame, the Sydney Opera house and finally, achieving his life long ambition; between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. All through the documentary the dizzying drive and true star quality of Petit is unavoidable. One image that will be forever burned into my mind is of him in his blacks lying on the wire between the towers, nonchalant as can be, with a cheeky grin to rival a young Malcolm McDowell. As film had ended the buzz and excitement in the audience heralded the arrival of the director and Petit himself. Instead of going into the Q&A, a very embarrassed Hannah McGill made an apology as apparently the middle two reels of the picture had been switched! Oh the hilarity! Poor Marsh stood at the front with a straight vodka in his hand. But perhaps this non-linear version of the movie was more in keeping with the erratic life of Petit himself. It certainly didn’t faze the audience; even Sean Connery (a patron of EIFF) stood up and announced it was in his top 3 of the whole festival. (Obviously less succinct than that – now in his 77th year, it was like watching your drunk grandad use a mobile phone) Anyway, This film rightfully won the Audience award for best film today settling that this will be on theatrical release as soon as possible. I know I’ll be seeing this one again.
