Peggy Sue @ Sneaky Pete’s

Peggy Sue

I have no idea what Peggy Sue’s tour transport is like but five tracks in at this excellent Sneaky Pete’s gig and I’m thinking it must resemble a second hand musical instrument shop on wheels. Electric guitars are changed on stage then big guitars are swapped for wee guitars, drum kits are doubled up, accordions are passed around then acoustic guitars are introduced as part of a constantly changing scene on stage. The quantity of instruments played by this indie-folk 3 piece is impressive but what is more striking is that this multi instrumentalist approach, along with double vocals from Rosa Rex and Katy Klaw, all works so well. “Lazarus”, the third track in, displays the duo’s trademark soaring, melancholic harmonies. New track “Dumbo” is aired, a warning in advance issued that “this might not go well”, but such is the confidence of this band that despite the fluffed guitar intro – complete with knowing smiles – it’s accepted that this slightly shuffling approach is part of their palpable charm. On “All we can keep” the band hit their plateau with a soaring Breeders meets Sons & Daughters style folk stomp with drummer Olly creating an almost disco shuffle on the hi-hat. Comparisons have been made with Kate Nash and Mumford & Sons – both outfits they have supported previously – but for me there is an honesty and a musicianship with Peggy Sue that far exceeds either of the bland, polished acts they’ve been mentioned alongside. With the songs to back up a fast rising profile it won’t be long until the band tour transport is being upgraded.
