Skeletons

UK Premier

Nick Whitfield/UK 2009/ 93 min/Cantonese with English subtitles

There’s a reason why we all have skeletons is our closets. Are you brave enough to face the past, cope with it, clear up the mess and betrayal, finally get some closure? Apparently some of us are, and in their darkest hour they call on emotional exorcists, Davis and Bennett.

But when the text book “going out for a pint of milk domestic disappearance” turns into a rather more difficult job, the psychic overload results in a failed distraction and is more than they can handle. In fact it all goes horribly wrong. But that’s what happens when you start mucking about with the big boys and fiddling in maverick operations of your own. The text book gets ripped up and thrown out of the window. Well, that’s if the window is actually a window and was there in the first place.

Skeletons delivers a believable whimsical world filled with smoke and mirrors that would give Derren Brown a run for his money. It’s a road movie except on foot and in brogues. The humour is gentle and unexpected, executed perfectly with lethal lines and lingering looks.  It has a delightful surreal edge perfectly balanced by quintessential British awkwardness, that positively revels in its quirky landscape of the mind. It will not disappoint, and if that’s not satisfying enough there’s not a scary demon or a bottle of holy water in sight.
