Renowned choreographer Richard Alston has been changing the face of British Dance since the sixties and shows no signs of slowing down, still creating fascinating and imaginative works today. Audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre will get the chance to enjoy an overview of his work this November with a trio of pieces from his company covering his history in dance.
Roughcut is Alston’s most popular work, danced to the hypnotic music of Steve Reich. A rarely revived piece the energy and passion of the dancers make it a never to be forgotten experience. In Memory, choreographed by Robert Cohan, who worked with the company for twenty years, is a quiet, intimate chamber piece featuring only six performers which draws you in and casts its spell with a mix of subtlety and power. Finally there’s a brand new piece from Alston in the form of Unfinished Business performed to two works by Mozart – a composer some might say was made for Alston’s lyrical style of choreography. The chance to see these pieces, particularly Roughcut, is not something that should be missed by lovers of dance and those who appreciate Alston’s seminal contribution.
