Of all the theatre, lectures and events on offer in Edinburgh this month, Champ may give the greatest insight of all into the true life of an actor. And it may just be enough to put a few aspiring thespians off.

Stanley (the good-natured innocent), Melvin (the silver-tongued lothario) and Elliot (the responsible one) are trained actors. At the moment they are playing the Three Bears in a shabby shopping centre. They are not having a good day: the child from hell is on the loose, the management are nowhere to be found, and their manager is dressed like a Chinese peasant and drinking in secret.

Champ is a gleefully profane romp which revels in its baroque obscenities and blatant disregard for political correctness. It isn’t one to see with your granny but the script is witty, the performances flawless and the production values extremely high. Also, it’s an awful lot of fun.
