Darren Lackie from Espresso Mondo cafe speaks about newly released blockbuster, Gravity. The film follows two astronauts struggling to return to Earth after their space shuttle is damaged.
I recently came back from New York where I saw the film Gravity. The film is great. From start to finish your clenching your fists, clenching your bum, the whole way through. Really good. However, the tension dramatically increases from the moment a certain character leaves the movie because you don’t know how the character left is going to get home safely. There were so many crazy and ridiculous things going on but you think the whole time; ‘Are they going to make it?’, ‘Is this going to happen?’ or ‘Is this going to hit them?’.
I also think the thing that really adds to it is the silence. There’s a part in the movie where a character is trying to detach a big parachute from an escape pod and it leads to a big explosion but there’s not a sound while your watching. I thought that was great, no cheap explosions. It was really well done. The visuals too are really good. There are only two films I’ve enjoyed in 3D, Avatar and Jackass 3D, so I don’t normally like 3D but this can add itself to the list. The visuals are absolutely brilliant. I was in a packed cinema watching the movie and the guy next to me, the two of us, every time some bit of debris came out of the screen towards us, the two of us were jumping away.
Obviously I’ve never been to space so I don’t know for sure but I imagine parts of it are quite realistic. There’s a bit at the start where a character drifts off. She’s spinning and she doesn’t stop, she can’t control herself and she just keeps going. I really liked that. And all these things go on for a very long time. It’s not edited really fast, instead its long drawn out scenes which I think add to the tension. It’s a really good film. I feel bad about talking about this so soon after its release because I don’t want to say any spoilers but I thought the whole movie was great until the ending. I was disappointed with one particular thing that didn’t happen, a specific thing but I’ll leave it at that. Other than that I though the film was fantastic.
