They say one of the pre-requisites of a classic Greek tragedy is that the protagonist has to fall from a great height. A look a Greece’s own fall over the last few thousand years will confirm the country itself as one highly suitable for its own artistic examination. So in light of their current economic disaster, the Greek Festival has arrived at the Filmhouse, with an eclectic selection of films to enlighten.
New work includes Giorgos Lanthimos’ Cannes-winning film Dogtooth which explore the damaging effects of patriarchy in Greek society, and Markos Gastin’s documentary Themis which shows us, for the first time, the inside of Greek courtrooms. There’s also Costa-Gavras’ progressive classic Z, based on the 1965 Lambrakis affair, and Costas Ferris’ 1983 exploration of politically motivated urban blues music Rembetiko.
