Showing @ Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh until Mon 26 Aug (not 13, 19) @ 13:00
This is not a show about the world’s most famous graffiti artist. Nor it is a show about Tachowa Covington, the man whose unconventional life was inadvertantly turned upside down when Banksy spray-painted “This looks a bit like an elephant” on the disused water tank he was living in. Rather this is the story of a fictionalised version of Covington and the uncomfortable issues raised by the sudden commodification of his home.
Gary Beadle, best known for his role in Eastenders, delivers a captivating performance in this solo show. His conversational, charismatic portrayal of the complex central character leaving the audience transfixed. Occasionally his emotions get the better of him and he lapses into low-key rapping to a soundtrack including Roni Size and Massive Attack. Tom Wainwright‘s fast-paced and wonderfully self-aware script is delivered as if the words are Beadle’s own and provides plenty of food for thought about where exactly – and on whom – we place value, and how we find the truth buried in someone else’s story.
