Showing @ Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh until Sun 25 Aug @ 13:20

Borges and I was the first show Idle Motion brought to the Fringe back in 2009, and it was as a direct result of that success that they chose to go professional. Four years on and that momentous decision that has brought them critical acclaim, sell-out audiences, multiple awards and international tours. This then, is a welcome chance to see where it all began.

Borges and I is inspired by the titular Argentine writer but it is also a eulogy to all things literary, a gentle love story and a meditation on creation, decay and what we leave behind. The central love story is sensitively portrayed by Sophie Cullen and Joel Gatehouse, but the real star of the show is the inventive staging which has become a hallmark of this company.

It is also a reminder of one of the principle strengths and weaknesses in the medium of devised theatre, which is that such productions are always works in progress. There is a trade-off to be made between the novelty of the new and the polish of the old: Idle Motion’s latest offering suffers slightly in comparison to this, but just imagine how good it will be in another four years.
