Showing @ Assembly George Square, Edinburgh until Mon 26 Aug (not 13) @ 19:50
The Briefs Boys first appeared on the Fringe three years ago where, it could be argued, they received less attention than was warranted by their unique blend of talent and trash. They returned the following year to perform the same show in a much larger venue, drawing the popular acclaim and rave reviews that they deserve.
For their third Fringe outing, they have developed an entirely new show and replaced several previous cast members. Former King of Burlesque Mark ‘Captain Kidd’ Winmill is back with a jaw-dropping finale, but sadly emcee Shivannah has less to say this year. The remaining cast has changed entirely and consequently the show has a slightly different flavour. Evil Hate Monkey, another past King of Burlesque, is wonderfully anarchic although his antics may cross the line for more squeamish viewers, and Dallas Dellaforce‘s act shows a more performance art-driven style of burlesque which feels slightly misplaced in the line-up. The contrast between this edgier material and what fresh-faced Louis Biggs does with a yo-yo perfectly demonstrate the vast range of performance styles that have developed in the cabaret scene, and it appears that Briefs has space for them all.
