Being a superhero isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, as acclaimed playwright Alistair McDowall reveals in this darkly comic solo show. In fact when the audience first meet Captain Amazing, he is drowning his sorrows and mere moments away from a bar brawl. Over the next hour, the audience accompany him on the bittersweet journey that has led him to his own personal Fortress of Solitude.

In Captain Amazing McDowall has created a script and a protagonist which demands an accomplished performer. There are ten different characters, jump cuts, flashbacks, rapid-fire delivery, pathos, comedy and battles both epic and banal. Actor Mark Weinman rises to the challenge, delivering a performance that is not just technically accomplished but utterly believable. The comic book-style children’s drawings which are key to an otherwise minimal set are the perfect finishing touch to a production that pays homage to the countless superheroes in our midst.
