This is a children’s show with an admirable pedigree: the newly formed Les Petits Theatre company are already well established to adult audiences as the multi-award-winning Les Enfants Terribles, the production is based on a popular picture book, it’s supported by a massive publicity campaign and staged in one of the Fringe’s most impressive venues. And of course, it’s also about pirates and dinosaurs. Even so, it takes a while to get going and some younger audience members initially appear ready for mutiny.
However once Captain Flinn and his schoolmate crew hit the high seas, it’s all hands on deck for a rollicking adventure. The original music, first-rate “watery” lighting effects, bubbles, and a whole host of quirky aquatic characters all make for a magical transformation. The production values and high calibre of the company are obvious throughout, and it is refreshing to see children’s theatre delivered with such professionalism.
