Of all the things you can expect to see at the Fringe, I can confidently promise that this will be the most depraved. In his debut stand-up show, Andrew Doyle takes us on a hilarious and often bizarre journey on his rampage to discover if he really is as degenerate as critics have proclaimed him to be. Full of blasé faux-innocence, no stone remains unturned as he dives into the often unchartered realms of sexual perversion and criminality.
Despite the odd subject matter, Doyle isn’t as weird as he might sound. Gay but not overtly camp, he’s pretty down-to-earth and heavily armed with a sharp tongue and quick wit. His gags are full of hilarious irony and inverted perceptions, from the Queen being guilty of bestiality to Enya as a kiddy-fiddler. Rather than simply churning out the same old spiel, Doyle feeds off his lively audience and is quickly able to respond to every heckle with a flourish of laughs that demonstrates just how much potential he really has.
But let’s not forget the name of the game here: depravity. Seeing Doyle masturbate with a plastic Mickey Mouse hand, unfortunately, takes Doyle’s show into the unnecessary realms of desperately trying to shock – but shock he does. Sadly, this over-the-top push to be noticed wannabe-style defers from what is an otherwise high quality production.
