Award-winning performance artist Bryony Kimmings has used previous shows to explore the allure of alcohol and female sexuality. For Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model, she turns her focus to children. Specifically, she is concerned with “tweens”: the 7-11-year-olds that constitute a huge target market for pop music, social media, and toy versions of adult products.
Kimmings and her 9-year-old niece Taylor present a performance piece set in a fantasy land where they battle against the creeping sexualisation of young girls and the more general commodification of childhood. These are bigger issues than could possibly be tackled in a sixty minute show, and indeed this is only a small part of a much more ambitious project. As such, it serves more as a springboard for a wider discussion as well as a platform for Catherine Bennett, the titular character created and managed by Taylor, aiming for no less than the modest goal of changing the world for a generation of girls.
