‘Anarchic’, ‘unpredictable’ and ‘subversive’ are just three words likely to be bandied about when Dr. Brown is the subject. First appearing at the Fringe in 2007, Phil Burgers’ eponymous clown has become one of Edinburgh’s most talked-about comedy characters. The show starts slowly, nearly half given over to expertly executed mime which, whilst amusing, hardly induces hilarity. But once the scenarios have been presented, both premise and audience are teased out and toyed with until exhausted; the former from expert comedic treatment and the latter from laughter. One suspects it’s impossible to predict where each night’s journey will go, yet for brave audiences the trip is sure to be worth it.
