Despite the fact that the protagonist of this biog-documentary will be anonymous to most people not versed in pop sci-fi, Harlan Ellison is an endearingly pissed-off man that can be appreciated irrespective of his work. The feted author of immortal TV scripts and fabulous literature himself takes us through his life, starting from a bullied childhood which seems to inform all he does afterward. Listening to him describe his escapades, you can’t help but ooze respect for the guy who climbed into a bookshop window with a typewriter to knock out a short story in an effort to show literature-phobic Americans that writers are workers just like them, not mysterious abstract names on a front cover of some book. An entertaining character study well worth seeking out.
