Many people have been involved in relationships where the balance of power is unequal. Joe Douglas has been in such a relationship for ten years, and this forms the basis for Educating Ronnie. At 18, Joe did the mandatory gap year experience in Uganda. The warmth he felt towards his new friends and his comparative wealth meant that when Ronnie later approached him for financial help, Joe happily obliged. The situation soon spiralled. As an examination of Western liberal guilt and the burdens it brings, Educating Ronnie will resonate with many. Joe is admittedly not a performer, and a greater sense of spontaneity in the telling would improve this show. However, it is ultimately more about the story rather than its delivery, and it is certainly a story worth hearing.
