Freeze! presents something of a conundrum for reviewers. How, after all, does one rate the spectacle of a man stacking rocks? Nick Steur unquestionably rates top marks for his skills of balance and concentration. There are many points during this performance when he attempts a move that is surely impossible, yet with his unrushed, meditative approach each balancing act he attempts is eventually successful.

The questions arise when one considers this as a piece of theatre. Fringe audiences weaned on a rapid fire diet of comedy and cabaret may not have the Zen-like focus which Steur possesses. There is a philosophical and often dryly humourous voice-over which explains a little about the ideas behind the work, and how restrictions can often provide a breeding ground for creativity. But the hard fact remains that this is a slow and labourious process for both viewer and artist. However, for anyone seeking respite from the hectic pace of Edinburgh in August, there is undeniable beauty and wonder to be found in this contemplative half-hour.
