Showing @ Summerhall, Edinburgh until Thu 22 Aug @ 23:00

The Demonstration Room at Summerhall purports to be a very haunted space. It certainly is on Thursday evenings, when the lights are lowered, the floor is strewn with bones and award-winning storyteller Marion Kenny takes to the stage to regale her audience with traditional tales of the supernatural.

It is always a pleasure to listen to a gifted storyteller, and Kenny effortlessly transfixes the audience with her magnetic presence and conversational style. In her capable hands, it is as though the venue is a friendly pub and Kenny the magnetic barfly who entertains, but also slightly unsettles. Her tales bring applause and ripples of nervous laughter as she forces the audience to consider whether they might soon feel the stroking of spectral hands. The stories themselves are low on the fright factor, for the most part simple folk tales that contain few surprises. The entertainment is provided by Kenny’s accomplished delivery and the chills from the venue itself.
