Do-Theatre’s Hangman is a Nashian abstraction, a perfect canvass onto which the audience can project their own interpretations. A trinity of characters – one deaf, one dumb, one blind – play an endless game whilst another keeps score and a third painstakingly constructs a model gallows. In the space of an hour, crimes are committed, criminals are sentenced and the guilty are executed. But who plays which role? Dynamics shift as gracefully as the illuminated books which light an early scene, characters are concealed and re-emerge, bodies are used as puppets or tumble over each other in a graceful dance. So what does it all mean? That’s up to you to decide.
