Sean Hughes‘ father tragically died of cancer last year. As subjects go for an hour of stand-up, the death of a parent might not seem the most obvious choice. But Hughes is not afraid to explore a difficult situation for laughs. What this show is lacking, in fact, is a sense of the weightiness implied by the subject matter. There are several points where the material threatens to become profound, and in each case the solemnity is quickly traded in on a joke. It’s difficult to fault Hughes for this; the audience have of course paid for comedy. But one can’t help but feel that perhaps a little more courage in facing the difficult subjects head-on would have paid off in a stronger show.
