@ King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, on Mon 4 Apr 2016

The delightfully well-mannered Teleman take to the King Tut’s stage offering wonderfully whimsical synth-led indie pop. The Brighton based quartet who formed from existing members of Pete and the Pirates, open with the beguiling Strange Combinations from their debut album, Breakfast. The unique vocals of Thomas Sanders instantly charm, creating a cheerful atmosphere which resonates through the crowd.

Like Hot Chip and Metronomy before them, Teleman favour bouncy electro with a psychedelic twist, as embodied in Brilliant Sanity, the first new song of the evening. From the upcoming album of the same name, it continues their characteristically off-kilter sound with a playful hook which, coupled with Sanders’ crisp vocals, ensure that although unknown to the crowd, it is positively received. Midway, the melancholic 23 Floors Up changes the tempo, as minimal synth and floating melodies drift through the intimate venue, creating a hushed atmosphere. The understated Cristina combines gentle guitar riffs, simple bass and intoxicating organ sounds; sweeping the audience into a laid-back trance. Drop Out proves a little too sparse, causing the energy to wane slightly. However, the psychedelic Steam Train Girl revives this quickly, before the distinctive Dusseldorf brings the Monday night crowd alive in the encore.

This promotional tour is off to a pleasant start and it is clear that the band’s signature enigmatic lyrics and idiosyncratic sound is here to stay, which is delightful news. Brilliant Sanity will be released 8 April 2016 on Moshi Moshi Records.
