Three years ago, the world watched and waited as 33 Chilean miners spent a record 69 days trapped underground. Their personal stories and the details of their struggle for survival became the stuff of legend. Indeed, as Wardrobe Ensemble point out in this new production, it eventually became virtually impossible – even for those directly involved in the disaster – to separate the facts of the situation from the myths surrounding it.
The Wardrobe Ensemble have already won critical acclaim for their debut Riot, which focused on the riots which broke out at the opening of an Ikea store. 33 is the second production in their “Real Things” trilogy. News footage and television clips, diagrams and film combine with live music and physical theatre to create an intense, immersive experience that questions the power of journalism to shape the stories it reports, and the discrepancy between reality and reportage. How can anyone know the truth when there are so many different versions of it?
