Any show entitled Triple Threat has implications of something overtly macho; of a bald-headed tattoo-covered muscle man with piercings protruding from every orifice, pounding his chest as he chugs pints and roars at his puny audience. But alas, far from being such a creature, David Morgan is distinctly normal, and embraces his otherwise subtle camp-ness through his not-quite-like-Glee love of musicals and amateur dramatics.
For his first solo show, Morgan holds his own as well as other experienced and respected acts at this year’s Fringe. Full of enthusiasm, he quickly gets his audience on side and projects a down-to-earth honesty that is impossible not to warm to. His subject matter is mainstream enough not to alienate anyone, but his full-on geeky love of musicals can be a little obscure for those who don’t share his same passion.
Despite having lots of potential, Morgan reveals his lack of experience (and possibly nerves) by speaking ridiculously quickly. This kind of rushed energy is great when a lengthy joke is reaching its climax, but continuing it from start to finish can be both irritating and distracting. His audience aren’t given a chance to digest what he’s saying – or to laugh as much as they might – and many of his stories seem unfinished before he jumps onto the next thing. With a bit of practice and confidence Morgan will iron out these kinks, but at the moment his set feels a bit like being attacked by a Tasmanian Devil in the full swing a tornado.
