A cat, a cat burglar and an evil gangster form the basis of Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gognol’s animated film, A Cat in Paris. Set in modern day Paris, Dino is Zoe’s (Oriane Zani) pet during the day, while her Mother, Jeanne (Dominique Blanc), works as a police officer and the cat burglar, Nico’s (Bruno Salomone) accomplice at night. But when Victor Costa (Jean Benguigui), the cruel gangster that killed Zoe’s Father, arrives in Paris to steal a priceless artefact, Nico, Dino, Zoe and Jeanne form an unlikely team to stop him.
Felicioli and Gagnol’s animated spoof of the gangster genre is a witty, warm yet at points very dark exploration of crime, revenge, obsession, and of course, all things feline related. Probably one of the shortest films on the French Film festival programme, A Cat in Paris will appeal to children and adults alike, thanks to its mix of physical comedy, delightful coincidences, and moments of real tension. Animated in classic French style, and depicting a number of larger than life and sometimes clichéd characters. However, while there are some holes in the plot, A Cat in Paris, like the cat in the title, is a clever film, containing more than a few twists and turns throughout. Funny, heart warming and highly acrobatic, this is a film for cat lovers.
