Cheating men, multiculturalism and childhood dreams. No, they aren’t ‘topics for today’ on Loose Women; they’re the inspiration for Shappi Khorsandi’s new show, Dirty Looks and Hopscotch. Opening with the Iranian-born comedian discussing her lifelong obsession with her heritage, the show digresses into a frank dialogue about her relationship with a roguish rock-star. Though never reaching hysterical laughter, Shappi has enough wit and charisma to be consistently funny for the duration. But what may be surprising to an audience only familiar with her television appearances, however, is that Shappi’s got edge. Whether discussing Twitter abuses, being ‘negged’ or the ridiculous dreams young girls are made to dream, there is a subtle, passive-aggressive tension to the show. Though it’s not a cardiac arrest inducing sixty minutes, it’s an hour spent in good company.
