Note: This review is from the 2013 Fringe

Showing @ Underbelly, Bristo Square, 31 Jul-26 Aug (not 13) @ 17.30

Alvin Sputnik appeared on the Fringe two years ago in an unassuming little space at the Underbelly. It was a theatrical experience unlike anything else, and two years later audiences are still talking about it. So Fringe-goers can feel doubly grateful this year, for not only has Alvin returned, but the team who created him have also developed an entirely new, and equally magical, show.

It’s Dark Outside has a very different subject matter but it is treated with the same combination of theatrical ingenuity and emotional complexity.  Here, the pursuit of a frail elderly man by a mysterious bounty hunter makes for a highly unusual Western. The company’s trademark use of projection, animation, shadow and mask work and highly skilled puppetry are used to both technically ingenious and visually stunning effect.

It is no hyperbole to call the team behind these shows (Tim Watts, Arielle Gray and Chris Isaacs) one of the most exciting things to happen to the Fringe in recent years. It’s Dark Outside deserves to be just as popular as its predecessor.
