There must be something in the Australian water. How else to explain the preponderance of exciting contemporary circus artists emerging from Down Under? Edinburgh audiences will already be familiar with acts like Casus and the Briefs boys, but this year there are several new companies to add to the ever-growing list of highly impressive physical performers. 3 is a Crowd stand out as an all-female troupe performing graceful and absurd feats, many of which you will never have seen before. Seeing what these women do with wine bottles alone is worth the ticket price (and if that makes it sound rude, it’s not).
As an exploration of the fight-flight-freeze response, Fright or Flight pitches performers Rockie Stone, Bianca Mackail and Olivia Porter as a veritable flock of different birds. They are by turns awkward, vulnerable, mocking, tender, absurd. Their set pieces run the gamut from jaw-dropping circus skills to pure silliness to pathos, all delivered by three very game birds indeed.
