Showing @ Bedlam Theatre, Edinburgh until Sat 24 Aug @ 16:25
We all have that experience where we meet an old friend who’s changed their look and for a moment we fail to recognise them. With it’s songs, dancing, pop culture references and comedy, Track 3 might not be immediately recognisable as a version of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, but it is and despite its repackaging it’s a fairly faithful one. Chekhov’s tale of stifled hopes and lives proscribed by provincial isolation and sex is all there on the stage, it just happens to come in a strange candy-coated wrapper.
Theatre Movement Bazaar are fabulous physical performers and their timing and use of space give this show a constant kinetic energy. Caitlyn Conlin, Dylan Jones and Kendra Chell as the sisters manage both to be broad in their comedy as well as portraying the stifling atmosphere of their lives. They are supported by equally energetic and well-judged performances from Mark Skeens as their worshipped brother Andrei, Elizabeth Vital as his scheming wife and Jesse Myers, David LM McIntyre and Mark Doerr as the soldier suitors. Familiarity with the original adds to the enjoyment, but it isn’t necessary, there’s enough colour, noise and exuberance on display to make this show a pleasure in its own right.
