To call the programme for Tradfest extensive is a major understatement. From 27 April to 8 May there are many performances, talks and events all looking at traditional aspects of Scottish culture and bringing these traditions to a contemporary festival audience.Gol are a four piece Scottish/Iranian band that blend genres, styles and compositions to create exuberant and experimental music. The band also use video projections to present a unique live performance that captivates the eye as well as the ear.
Gol take the stage and set the tone for the performance by opening with a heartfelt and dream-like song which seems to soar around the Netherbow Theatre in the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
After the band play a couple of tracks they treat the audience to a short film called Red Burkha. The informative and evocative documentary tells the story of the traditional headwear which is worn in Southern Iran and paints a colourful picture of the region.
The mix of Persian influenced music and experimental film works well, with the songs complimenting the visuals and vice versa. The music itself has a laid-back jazz and soulful feel and is the perfect soundtrack to the evening.
Tradfest continues until 8 May with more music and engaging performances. The show this evening was the first time Gol has performed at this interesting and important festival and the performance underlined the scope and range of the events on offer.
