Steffan Alun is a Welsh standup comedian who regularly appears on BBC Wales, S4C and Radio Cymru. Steffan performs at top comedy clubs and has performed solo shows at theatres all over the UK including the prestigious Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, as well as providing tour support for Elis James.

Having been a regular performer at the Fringe for years, 2025 sees him brining his debut full-length show, ‘Stand Up’ to Edinburgh. We spoke to Steffan, his expectations for August, and what took him so long.

Can you tell us about ‘Stand Up’?

It’s a culmination of a decade and a half of writing and performing comedy, and a celebration of stand-up in general! Pure, classic stand-up, full of big laughs and a lot of joy. 9.30pm every night in Hoot 4 at the Apex Hotel on Grassmarket!

For those unfamiliar with your work, how would you describe your comedy style and approach to performance?

High-energy, optimistic and warm. An audience member once described me as a “Welsh bisexual Russell Howard”, and that’s how I’ve been explaining myself ever since.

‘Stand Up,’ is your debut full-length Edinburgh show, after 10 years of shorter slots. What are your hopes and expectations for the month?

I’m ready to take that step up. I’ve loved developing my work in secret, ignoring the wider industry – but times are changing, and I want to reach an even wider audience. So that’s my hope – that by this time next year, there’ll be a much bigger audience anticipating my next brilliant show!

Why have you chosen this year to go for the full-length show?

Last year’s show was my most successful by miles – turning people away at the door most days. There were days when people chose to sit on the stage just to get in the room. I produce my best work when it’s difficult, so it was time for a bigger challenge.

Apart from your show, is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to (or dreading) about the Fringe?

I’m so excited to spend the month with other comedians. Seeing other people’s shows, and analysing them with my best friends in comedy. And I’m excited for all the format shows I’ll be performing during the month – I’m the regular host of ‘2 Truths 1 Lie‘ now, which means I get to work with at least 6 different acts every single day.

You’ll also be hosting ‘Comedians Play Video Games’. Can you tell us about that?

Yes! This was Jake Baker’s idea, and he approached me with it. Jake’s an amazing comedian, and hugely underrated – gentle, fiercely intelligent, and a really good friend too. But when we play games, we become very competitive and petty. This will be a late-night show where we pit guest comedians against each other, with the audience helping to decide who should be helped or hindered.

Beside ‘Stand Up’ and ‘Comedians Play Video Games’, can we expect to see you performing elsewhere during August?

‘2 Truths 1 Lie’ at 3pm and 8pm most evenings, also at Hoots. I introduce three comedians, who’ll perform some stand-up, then make a statement about themselves. One of them’s lying, and the audience get to work out who.

There’s some amazing lineups this year, and I’m hyped for it!

Are there any other acts at the Fringe that you would recommend audiences see?

Definitely! Ignacio LopezJosh Elton, Jake Baker, Cerys Bradley, Dave Chawner, Priya Hall, Phil Cooper, Robyn Perkins – anyone who likes my work is bound to enjoy this lot.

Stand Up‘ is at Hoots@The Apex – Hoots 4 from Thu 31 Jul to Mon 26 Aug 2025 at 21:30
