Showing @ Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, Fri 10 & Sat 11 Feb

In a new romantic comedy by award-winning Alistair Rutherford of BBC Radio 4, it’s a wet winter’s night at the Docker’s Social Club and there’s been a terrible mistake. They booked ‘The Ace of Spades’ thinking it was a Motörhead tribute band, but got Tommy (Philip Kingscott) the Magician instead. The only solution for Tommy is to make a sharp exit and retreat to the pub down the road to drown his bruised ego in the bottom of a pint glass. But when a soaked and stood-up Alice (Anna Guthrie) stomps in armed with a vow never to bother with romance again, it seems that true love – and magic – might just be real.

The brainchild of Kingscott, Peapod Productions’ aim is to create opportunities to showcase new or unknown work – and they’re developing a good track record for themselves. As well as leading workshops as far afield as Italy, this is the second of Rutherford’s plays to have been staged by the company; site-specific The Garden toured across the UK last year. With director Andy Corelli a Fringe regular and both Kingscott and Guthrie previously involved in award-winning productions, this looks to be an unpretentiously high quality production – and well worth checking out.
