The common misconception of Tourrettes is that it is a swearing syndrome. While this is indeed an element of it, Jess Thom (aka Touretteshero) is out to set the story straight, using herself as the case study. The jolly and affable Jess, aided by actress Chopin (one of Jess’ tick nicknames), gives a boisterous and amusing description of what living with tourettes is actually like and how it can manifest itself. Although Jess’ life story is littered with difficulties, the bubbly and excitable delivery gives the show a positive atmosphere.

The surreal nature of some of Thom’s verbal ticks make it easy to find the humour with Thom encouraging (and joining in with) the laughter, and when coupled with the cartoon-like props and haphazard style, Biscuit Land takes on a heightened sense of reality. Balancing the comedy however, Jess also shares a sombre account of how tourettes has caused her emotional pain, emphasising how although it’s a condition that can be funny, it can also, in the way people might react to it, cause distress. Jess and Chopin have created an energetic and engaging theatrical lecture, which through the open way Jess shares her experiences, both educates and entertains.
