Rosebud
Sarah Leonor/France/2009/96 min/tbc/French with English subtitles
Two mismatched lovers, a school teacher, Isabelle, (Florence Loiret-Caille) and career criminal Bruno,(Guillaume Depardieu) abandon everything and go on the run in Sarah Leonor’s idealistic study of the lengths we will go to for the one we love.
Inspired by French ‘New Wave’ cinema of the 50s and 60s, A Real Life captures a doomed love affair with a delicate sense of childlike wonder and hope. While the story of an unlikely romance blossoming against social convention, isn’t an original one, Leonor’s film gives it another chance with the use of a road movie narrative and a unique soundtrack. Peppered with themes of longing, escapism, unfulfilled talent and forgotten dreams, A Real Life charts the highs and lows of rejecting societal rules and conventions. Billed as a ‘road movie’, this film follows two very different characters on a journey that will change their lives and the lives of the people around them forever. Although initially slow to start, Depardieu’s final film serves as a fitting eulogy to his versatility and power as an actor, as his turn as a petty thief who escapes his life the only way he knows how, was utterly touching, and above all, utterly believable.
