What made The Thick of It so superb was its all-round approach to satire. Slick writing, smart direction and inspired casting brought together a vision of incisive and witty commentary which never preached about the inadequacy and incompetency of our political overlords; instead it generated extra clout. The same can be said of Coalition, lined with members from comedy’s elite including Phill Jupitus and Jo Caulfield: an intelligent, funny and welcome spoof of the current government and its Jenga-esque frailties. Thom Tuck leads the way as a nervy Lib Dem leader, trying to force through his own legacy as the coalition draws to a close, but single-handedly attempting to prevent MPs defecting all over the place. This is polished, ruthless satire, the kind we need much, much more of in Britain.
