Maja Borg / UK/Sweden / 2012 / 93 min

Sometimes in a relationship, it’s hard to face facts; we’ve run our course, and though it was great while it lasted (despite a few wobbles), it’s now time to move on. If we can acknowledge this on a personal level, it’s surely within our power to do so on a collective level – in our relationship with capitalism for example. This is exactly Maja Borg’s point in her ambitious, fascinating but ultimately flawed feature, Future My Love. Part documentary, part reflective experiment, the film follows Borg’s emotional and political journey as she travels America and beyond, searching for answers.

Undoubtedly the star of the film is Jacque Fresco, an indefatigable polymath in his early nineties who exuberantly discusses what is wrong with the world, and his vision for how it could be. His effulgent faith in science and humanity is entirely Shelleyan, making every moment of his screen time both joyous and enlightening. Furthermore, the social projects and breakthrough technologies explored are astonishing, filling one with hope. However, the strength of this side of the film is a doubled-edged sword, as it draws attention from the more personal moments. For all their beauty, throughout these sequences you can’t help wanting more Jacque. The divorce analogy works in theory but just doesn’t quite translate. Though imperfect, this film is inestimably important.
