The genteel India Buildings are not where one would normally go to search for a New Age epiphany. But follow the steps to the top of the dome and a perky American woman will welcome you to the sweat lodge. The set has been convincingly created with a colourful tent complete with sand floor. Once all the “devotees” are seated, the charismatic leader arrives to introduce the programme. Hearts on Fire is verbatim theatre telling the story of the 2009 desert retreat where three participants died. Their “guru” was later convicted. As an exploration of the responsibility that comes with power, and the consequences of neglect, Hearts on Fire is an intense, immersive piece of theatre.
