The work of cult horror writer, HP Lovecraft, particularly his seminal short story, The Dunwich Horror, gets a new lease of life in what is billed as ‘the world’s first audio movie’. Set in the fictional village of Dunwich, Massachusetts, in the early 20th century, this new cinematic experience tells the tale of a supernatural incident that could have threatened the whole of mankind.
This co-production with Bang Ltd and Savalas, is a faithful adaptation of the work of one of the influential horror writers of the last 100 years. This experience invites the audience to rely solely on their imagination as The Dunwich Horror’s use of SFX and music attempts to create a world of fear. While the film does provide some eerie moments it’s let down by the use of narration and a somewhat hammy sound, which undermine the tension of the piece. Although this audio film continues with the tradition of short stories that were written to be read in front of an audience, such as the work of Charles Dickens and MR James, The Dunwich Horror relies heavily on the sounds and not the words, which makes for a more humorous experience than was originally intended.
