The inimitable late dub pioneer’s official final album exemplifies his willingness to take risks through experimentation. And who better for the Jamaican space dub rocker to collaborate with than Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma, aka electronic Dusseldorf trailblazers Mouse On Mars? After all, one of their finest projects was the bellicose Von Sudenfed – a gnarly team up with the late Mark E. Smith.
That it’s an eclectic stew should almost go without saying. There are typically jazzy dubs anchored by Perry’s trademark eccentric stream -of-consciousness mutterings on ‘Spatialee’, a motorik, Krautrock pulse on the sublime ‘Rockcurry’, and old school rubadub on ‘To The Rescue’.
‘State Of Emergency ‘ goes even further out into doomy, free jazz territory, imbued with brass and drones: not exactly a four to the floor anthem. And as it builds in momentum, it’s like a rather beautiful lament meditating on the mounting evidence of the climate crisis. ‘Yayaya’ leans more into Mouse On Mars territory, teasing ambient electronic noodles. On paper, it sounds like it shouldn’t fit, yet all slots together beautifully.
It’s music with one foot in the past and one in the future, as befits two such disparate artists. It’s more than just another mash-up, it’s more akin to a love letter to the possibilities of sonic technique and creativity. With the passing of Perry in 2021, there can be no more fitting a tribute to his indefatigable and restless spirit.
