Ever told one of those lies that just goes a little out of control? A lie that in fact doesn’t so much snowball, as turn into a big slushy Mount Everest of a mess. My Words, My lies, My Love is a cute little German rom-com type of affair with a cerebral twist. It’s a simple plot. Boy (Daniel Bruhl) falls for girl (Hannah Herzsprung), she doesn’t notice him, cause girls don’t want waiters they want writers, he finds a manuscript, pretends it’s his, shows it to her, she goes weak at the knees and sends his book off to a publishers and surprise, surprise it makes the Judy and Richard Book Club – and faster than you can say, pass me my Montblanc fountain pen, it’s a best seller. Needless to say, he reaps the benefits of his overnight success, struggles with the spotlight and the guilt over his deception. Yes, it’s all going terribly well until someone appears who claims to be the real writer. The performances are strong, believable and genuinely touching as they weave this web of deceit, and can turn the mood from happy to sad convincingly simply in a heartbeat. The film has it’s flaws but it undoubtedly wins you over and makes you fall just a little bit in love with it. It’s not perfect but it’s for anyone who’s ever done something outrageous for love and found themselves in a spot of bother because of it. And after all everyone’s got a book in them haven’t they?
