It isn’t panto season again?! Oh yes it is!

And what a welcome addition to the Festival Theater this pantomime is this particularly chilly festive season. Don your glass slippers and prepare for a whirlwind of fairy tale fun as Cinderella graces the stage featuring well loved panto veterans Allan Stewart, Grant Stott, and Jordan Young. Taking to the stage as Fairy May aka the Fairy Godmother, Baroness Hibernia Fortuna aka the wicked stepmother and Buttons respectively, each bring their own unique comedic style to these larger-than-life characters which is set to make this a Christmas must-see. This production promises to deliver belly laughs, dazzling costumes, and all the magical mayhem audiences expect from one of Edinburgh’s most cherished traditions.

Following many of the beats of the classic fairy tale, a downtrodden Cinderella dreams of attending the royal ball but is hindered by her outrageously mean stepsisters. With a wave of her Fairy Godmother’s wand, Cinderella’s fortunes change, leading to romance, a lost glass slipper, and a quest for true love. Yet, in true panto style, it’s the hilarious twists, local humor, and over-the-top antics that steal the show. Expect clever gags, topical references, and plenty of cheeky asides to keep both wee ones and adults entertained.

There are so many surprising and entertaining elements of the production it is hard to be bored. From the hilarious modern pop-culture references (get practicing your ‘apple’ dances) to the technological feats in the closing of Act 1, it is fair to say this is not your average pantomime.

What makes this production stand out is it is brimming with musical and comedic talent. Ranging from a mix of pop hits and traditional tunes, each musical number is performed with gusto by a talented cast. Amber Sylvia Edwards and Will Callan balance the campy over-the-top aspects with their impressive singing performances as the leads Cinderella and Prince Charming.

The best part though, hands down is the natural charm and playful banter shared between the cast. There is nothing better than seeing the three veterans regularly break character to make each other hold down a laugh which keeps the show feeling as fresh and fun as the first showing. You can tell how much love and care goes into their performances.

Something that never gets old is the unwavering enthusiasm audiences give from start to finish. Audience interaction, a hallmark of great pantomime, is delivered in spades thanks to the encouragement of the cast. Whether you’re cheering for Cinders or booing the dastardly Ugly Sisters, the cast’s energy ensures that every age group is swept into the panto fever. The show’s playful spirit ensures everyone, from seasoned panto-goers to first-timers, feels part of the fun. If you see any pantos this season, make sure it is this one!
